DSS arraigns 5 suspects over kidnap of 20 prospective NYSC members in Imo State. All victims rescued alive from forest. 3 suspects still fleeing with gunshot wounds.
The Department of State Services (DSS) has arraigned five suspected kidnappers linked to the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members and one civilian along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway in Imo State.
The suspects were arraigned on Monday, October 20, 2026, before Justice Oputa at the State High Court in Owerri.
*How The Abduction Happened*
According to security sources, on *October 1, 2026*, 20 prospective corps members traveling from Ibadan, Oyo State to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom States were kidnapped near Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area of Imo State. A civilian traveling with them was also abducted.
The incident triggered nationwide outrage and panic among parents of corps members.
In a swift coordinated operation involving the DSS, military, and police, all *20 corps members and the civilian were rescued alive on October 7, 2026*, from Amakohia-Ubi forest in Owerri West LGA. The victims were immediately taken to the DSS medical facility in Owerri for treatment and debriefing.
Following intelligence-led tracking, the joint security team stormed the suspects' hideouts in *Port Harcourt, Rivers State and Aba, Abia State* between October 10 and 14, arresting five members of the syndicate. Three other suspects reportedly escaped with gunshot injuries during a gun duel with operatives.
*Why This Case Is Important*
*1. A New Operational Strategy By DSS:*
This operation shows a shift in DSS tactics. The suspects were not arrested in Imo where the kidnap happened, but tracked to Rivers and Abia, proving they are a mobile criminal syndicate operating across the South-East and South-South corridor. Their use of Amakohia-Ubi forest as a camp also reveals a new pattern of forest camps around Owerri West.
*2. NYSC Route Now Dangerous:*
The Umunoha-Mbaitoli axis of the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway has become a hotspot for kidnapping corps members traveling from the West to the East. Stakeholders are calling on the NYSC management to review travel policies and enforce safer travel measures for prospective corps members.
*3. Why State High Court And Not Federal High Court?*
The DSS filed the case at the Imo State High Court under the *Imo State Kidnapping Prohibition Law 2015*, which carries life imprisonment or death penalty. Security analysts say this is a smart move to ensure speedy trial and quick justice, unlike federal terrorism charges which could drag for years.
*4. Manhunt For 3 Fleeing Suspects:*
The DSS confirmed that three suspects are still on the run with bullet wounds. The agency has alerted hospitals, clinics, and patent medicine stores in Imo, Rivers, Abia, and Anambra to report anyone seeking treatment for gunshot wounds without a police report.
This is a major breakthrough for security forces in the South-East. In the past, such cases often ended with ransom payments and no arrests. The rescue of all victims alive and the arraignment of suspects within 19 days is a significant win.
However, security experts urge the Imo State Government to clear the criminal hideouts in Amakohia-Ubi forest and establish a Forward Operating Base in Mbaitoli LGA to secure the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway ahead of the next NYSC orientation batch.
The case has been adjourned for further hearing.
