There is tension in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State this afternoon, Friday October 30, 2026, following an attack on the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore.
*WHAT SOWORE'S TEAM REPORTED:*
At about 1:00pm today, armed men reportedly stormed *Tawakalitu Restaurants and Catering Services* around Dalimore area, Ado-Ekiti, where Sowore was having a meeting during campaign activities ahead of the Ikogosi Marathon.
A post on his official Facebook/X page at 1pm read:
"Thugs just attacked us inside a restaurant in Ado Ekiti."
Minutes later, another post read:
"Armed thugs kidnap Sowore. His current location is unknown!"
His campaign spokesperson, Abdulkareem Musa, raised alarm, calling on security agencies, DSS, INEC and Amnesty International to urgently establish his whereabouts. Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju also condemned the attack, saying Sowore's police orderly was disarmed.
Sowore himself later wrote: "THERE WAS NO ALTERCATION! WE WERE ATTACKED!" He accused government-sponsored thugs from Government House who were allegedly given tracking support by the DSS.
*WHAT EKITI POLICE SAID:*
The Ekiti State Police Command has *debunked the kidnap report*.
In a statement signed by the PPRO, *SP Sunday Abutu*, the police said:
"The Command wishes to categorically clarify that Mr. Sowore was not kidnapped. Rather, preliminary information indicates that he had an altercation with some individuals at a restaurant around Dalimore area, Ado-Ekiti... Upon receiving the report, Police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene and successfully rescued him. He, however, sustained a minor injury and is currently receiving medical attention at the Police Hospital, Ado-Ekiti."
The Commissioner of Police, *CP Falade Adegoroye Michael*, has ordered a discreet investigation and personally visited the scene. Police say they have rescued him and he is at Police Hospital.
*CURRENT SITUATION:*
As of 6pm today, Sowore is confirmed to be at Police Hospital, Ado-Ekiti receiving treatment for minor injury. Police insist it was not a kidnap but an altercation. Sowore insists it was a brutal politically motivated attack.
The Ekiti State Government is yet to speak.
