Sent money to wrong account? Don't panic, don't beg the receiver first. CBN Section 10.4: Report to YOUR bank immediately, get complaint reference, bank places lien, auditors mediate within 2 weeks. If receiver refuses, BVN watch-list + police + court. Keeping wrong money = 5-10 years jail - CBN Governor.
How to Recover Money Sent to the Wrong Bank Account in Nigeria: CBN Unveils Steps
You typed one wrong digit. You pressed send. ₦50,000, ₦200,000, ₦1 million - gone to a stranger.
Your heart is beating. You want to call the stranger and beg. STOP.
Do NOT call the receiver first. Do THIS first - CBN has a proper procedure.
This is the official CBN procedure under Regulation on Instant (Inter-Bank) Electronic Funds Transfer Services (2018), Section 10.4 - Transfer Recall Due to Customer Error.
STEP 1: ACT IMMEDIATELY - SPEED IS EVERYTHING
Nigerian transfers use NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP). Money lands in seconds. You cannot cancel it like a pending order.
Your goal is to FREEZE the money before the stranger spends it.
Call / chat / visit YOUR bank immediately - not the receiver's bank. Use official customer care, app chat, or branch.
Tell them: "I made a genuine mistake transfer, I want to file a formal transfer recall."
STEP 2: GIVE THEM THESE 5 DETAILS - NO STORY
Bank will not act on "I sent money to wrong person." Give them:
1. Amount sent
2. Date + Time of transfer
3. Your account name + number
4. Wrong beneficiary account name + number + bank
5. Transaction Reference / Session ID - from your debit alert / app receipt
Screenshot your debit alert NOW. Screenshot your app receipt NOW. You will need them.
STEP 3: REQUEST FORMAL RECALL + GET COMPLAINT REFERENCE
Say these exact words to your bank: "Please initiate interbank recovery / transfer recall under CBN Section 10.4."
Insist on:
- Written complaint / email - not just phone call
- Complaint / Ticket Reference Number
- Name of officer handling it
Without a reference number, your case does not exist. Follow up every 2 days with that number.
STEP 4: WHAT YOUR BANK MUST DO - KNOW YOUR RIGHT
Once your bank establishes your complaint is credible:
1. Your bank notifies the RECEIVER'S bank
2. Receiver's bank MUST place a LIEN / Post-No-Debit (PND) on the disputed amount - if money is still in account. Lien = money is blocked, receiver cannot withdraw it.
3. Receiver's bank seeks receiver's CONSENT to reverse the money to you.
4. Internal auditors of BOTH banks must mediate between you and receiver WITHIN 2 WEEKS of complaint.
5. Lien should NOT remain beyond 2 weeks under this procedure.
If receiver agrees - money returns to you.
This is different if BANK made the error: If bank sent wrong amount contrary to your instruction, receiving bank MUST reverse within 1 business day, NO consent needed, after sending bank writes within 14 working days. That is Section 10.2.
STEP 5: IF RECEIVER REFUSES OR HAS SPENT THE MONEY
This is where many Nigerians give up. Don't.
If receiver refuses to refund or has spent the money and refuses to replenish:
1. Bank auditors must WATCH-LIST the receiver's BVN - meaning they cannot open new bank accounts easily, and will be flagged in banking industry.
2. Your bank can report matter to LAW ENFORCEMENT - Police / EFCC.
3. You can get: Police Report / Extract + Swear Affidavit in Court, submit to your bank, and get COURT ORDER to forcefully reverse.
Keeping money sent to you by mistake is a CRIME in Nigeria - theft, conversion, unjust enrichment.
CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso warned on 23 Oct 2026 at Ibadan: "A customer who fails to refund wrongly deposited money to the rightful owner attracts 5-10 years' imprisonment."
So if someone receives your money by mistake and says "God has blessed me" - tell them God did not bless them with jail.
STEP 6: ESCALATE TO CBN IF BANK DELAYS - AFTER 2 WEEKS
Do NOT go to CBN on Day 1. CBN says: First approach your bank, allow 2 weeks for resolution.
If after 2 weeks bank has not resolved, escalate to CBN Consumer Protection Department:
- Email: cpd@cbn.gov.ng
- CBN Call Centre: 0700-225-5226
- CBN Complaint Portal: https://www.cbn.gov.ng - Consumer Protection Complaints
Attach: Transaction evidence, amount, bank name, and PROOF you complained to your bank first (your complaint reference + emails). Do NOT include your ATM PIN or password in complaint letter - CBN will NEVER ask for it.
Banks take CBN complaints very seriously. It usually speeds things up.
STEP 7: WHAT IF IT WAS FRAUD, NOT MISTAKE?
If someone tricked you to send money (fake seller, fake investment, Yahoo boy) - that is FRAUD, not customer error.
Report immediately to:
- Your bank Fraud Desk
- Police / EFCC
- NIBSS Fraud Desk
Fraud cases follow different CBN Fraud Desk Circular. Recovery is harder, but faster report = higher chance.
3 MISTAKES THAT MAKE PEOPLE LOSE THEIR MONEY FOREVER:
1. Calling receiver to beg first - Receiver will quickly withdraw money and block you. Report to bank FIRST, then bank will freeze it.
2. Waiting till tomorrow - By tomorrow, money is gone. Lien only works if money is still in account.
3. Paying "agent" to reverse - No agent can reverse. Only your bank + CBN process. Anyone asking you to pay to reverse is a scammer.
HOW TO PREVENT WRONG TRANSFER NEXT TIME:
- Always check NAME before you press send - NIP shows account name. If name does not match, CANCEL.
- Send ₦100 test first for big amounts - ₦500k, ₦1m - send ₦100, call receiver to confirm, then send balance.
- Save beneficiaries - Don't type account number every time.
- Don't rush - 90% of wrong transfers happen when person is in a hurry, in market, in traffic.
