*BREAKING: Tinubu Grants Federal Universities Recruitment Autonomy - No More Waiver From Head of Service*
Good news for job seekers and federal university workers in Imo State and across Nigeria!
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally granted full recruitment autonomy to all federal universities in the country.
This means federal universities will no longer need to obtain recruitment waiver from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation before employing academic and non-academic staff.
*How The News Was Announced*
President Tinubu announced this major reform on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the maiden convocation ceremony of the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare (FUHSA), Bauchi State.
The President, who is the Visitor to all federal universities, was represented at the event by the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Arc. Sonny Echono.
According to him, the exemption has been documented in the recent agreements signed between the Federal Government and university staff unions.
*What This Means For Universities*
For years, many federal universities like FUTO in Owerri, IMSU and others have been complaining about acute shortage of lecturers and non-academic staff because of the long process of getting waiver from Abuja.
With this new directive, Imo Media Hub gathered that:
1. The Federal Ministry of Education and University Governing Councils can now recruit directly.
2. Universities can quickly fill vacancies and respond to their manpower needs.
3. The bottleneck of waiting months for waiver approval is now removed.
In his words, Tinubu said: "This measure empowers the Federal Ministry of Education and university Governing Councils to discharge their respective responsibilities in staff recruitment, enabling institutions to respond more effectively to their legitimate manpower needs."

In addition to this, President Tinubu also disclosed that the Federal Government is working to improve salary payment in tertiary institutions.
He said the government will migrate staff of tertiary institutions from the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System (IPPIS) to the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).
He said this will ensure timely salary payment, transparency, and will accommodate the peculiarities of tertiary institutions.
