INEC says it is investigating suspected AI-generated photographs in the Preliminary Voters Register published Oct 26, says flagged records will be corrected before final register on Dec 15.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced investigation into reports of suspected Artificial Intelligence (AI)-generated photographs appearing in the Preliminary Register of Voters recently published on its website.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the Chairman of INEC’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, said the Commission noted public concerns and reports circulating on social media.

INEC clarified that the register published online on 26 October 2026 is the same preliminary register that was physically displayed at Registration Areas (RAs) nationwide from 9th to 15th October 2026 as part of the Display, Claims and Objections exercise.

According to the Commission, during the physical display, some questionable registration records were identified and flagged for further examination. The Commission subsequently began reviewing the records and taking appropriate corrective measures in line with established procedures.

INEC explained that the online publication contains the original preliminary register and does not reflect all ongoing data-cleaning activities.

The electoral body stressed that the preliminary register is NOT the final certified Register of Voters. The display exercise is designed to enable citizens to scrutinize records, identify inaccuracies and irregularities, and request corrections before final certification on 15th December 2026.

The Commission added that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the suspicious photographs, including possible technical or procedural lapses, and will take appropriate action based on verified findings.

INEC also expressed appreciation to citizens and stakeholders who drew attention to the issue, describing their vigilance as important to the credibility of the voter registration process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
