Political power is temporary but impact is permanent. Many Nigerian politicians lose relevance after office because they built sycophants instead of people. Here is how office holders can avoid the collapse of their political kingdom.
*HOW POLITICAL OFFICE HOLDERS CAN AVOID THE COLLAPSE OF THEIR POLITICAL KINGDOM AFTER OFFICE*
One of the greatest tragedies in Nigerian politics is to see a man who once commanded thousands of followers, sirens and praise singers suddenly become lonely after leaving office.
The truth is simple: *Office is temporary, but impact is permanent.*
Many political office holders focus on building a kingdom of loyalists who benefit from contracts and appointments, but they forget to build people. When the office is gone, the sycophants disappear, and the kingdom collapses. No group, no matter how loyal, will be happy when calamity befalls their leader if that leader did not genuinely touch their lives while in office.
This is why every political office holder must be careful about how he uses power.
*Why Political Kingdoms Collapse:*
1. *Building Sycophants Instead of People:* When you empower only those who sing your praises, they will abandon you when another person takes over.
2. *Arrogance of Power:* Insulting elders, fighting traditional institutions and forgetting those who helped you.
3. *No Human Capital Development:* Building roads without building people. Roads will wash away, but a man you trained will remember you forever.
4. *Betrayal and Use-and-Dump Syndrome:* Using youths for elections and dumping them after victory.
*Lessons From Those Who Lost Relevance:*
Nigeria is full of examples of leaders who were once very powerful but have little or no impact in the lives of their people after office.
- Some former Governors who dominated their states for 8 years cannot win their polling units today.
- Some former Senators and House of Reps members who shared rice and wrapper during elections but never attracted one project or gave one scholarship now struggle to be recognized in their villages.
- Some former Ministers who had access to federal power but did not facilitate a single employment for their people now walk alone, without even an aide.
In Imo State, we have seen former very powerful political leaders who once controlled the entire political structure but today cannot gather 10 people in their own local government because while in office, they fought everyone and empowered no one.
On the other hand, look at leaders who still command respect years after office because they invested in people. Even out of office, their homes are still full because they gave jobs, scholarships, business capital and hope.
*How To Sustain Your Political Kingdom:*
1. Invest in people, not just in structures.
2. Be accessible and humble both in and out of office.
3. Create opportunities that outlive your tenure.
4. Never forget your base — your ward and LGA.
5. Respect relationships and keep your promises.
The 2026 Promotions as seen in the Federal Civil Service Commission is a reminder that public service is about promotion and growth. As a political leader, if you promote your people while in office, they will promote and defend you when you are out of office.
Power will end, but the good you do will continue to speak for you.
