*CONSTITUTIONAL FACT CHECK: SECTIONS 182, 183 & 184 OF THE 1999 CONSTITUTION OF NIGERIA (AS AMENDED)*

Many Nigerians ask what the law says about a Governor holding another job. Here is the clear explanation.

*SECTION 183 - The Main Provision:*
> "The Governor shall not, during the period when he holds office, hold any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever."

*What it means:*
1. *No Double Executive Role:* A Governor cannot be Minister, Commissioner, LGA Chairman, Senator, or hold any other executive office while serving as Governor.
2. *No Paid Work:* He cannot work for any company, bank, law firm, or do any other job that pays salary. His only paid job is Governor.
3. *Why?* To prevent conflict of interest and ensure 100% focus on governing the State.

*SECTION 182 - Who Cannot Be Governor? (Disqualifications):*
No person shall be qualified if:
a) He has taken citizenship of another country (except by birth)
b) He has been elected Governor twice before
c) He is declared of unsound mind
d) He is under death sentence or imprisonment for fraud/dishonesty
e) Within 10 years before election, convicted of dishonesty or guilty of Code of Conduct breach
f) He is an undischarged bankrupt
g) As a civil servant, he did not resign 30 days before election
h) He is a member of a secret society
i) He has been indicted for embezzlement/fraud by Judicial Commission
j) He presented a forged certificate to INEC

*SECTION 184 - The Punishment for Violating Section 183:*
> "The Governor shall cease to hold office as Governor if -
> a) By reason of Section 182 he becomes disqualified; or
> b) He holds any other executive office or paid employment in any capacity whatsoever in contravention of Section 183."

*Simple Meaning:* If a Governor takes another executive office or paid job, he *automatically loses his seat*. He ceases to be Governor.

*How The Three Work Together:*
*Section 182 = Who cannot contest*
*Section 183 = A sitting Governor must not take another job*
*Section 184 = If he does, he must vacate office*

This is to protect democracy, prevent abuse of power, and ensure the Governor serves only the people of his State.
